The Truth About “Clean Ingredients” in Meal Delivery

Pretty much every meal delivery service claims “clean”, healthy meals, but are they really? We took a look at a few popular delivery options and were surprised by what we found. Today we’re breaking down common ingredients you’ll find in so-called clean pre-prepared meals, and how Snap is different. 

The Not So Clean Ingredients

  • Olive Pomace Oil – this is the lowest-quality olive oil, and in fact is a byproduct of olive oil production. Since olive is in the name, some meal prep companies have started using this to claim they’re still seed oil-free. 
  • Agave nectar – though often touted as a healthy sweetener, agave is highly processed in the same way that high fructose corn syrup is
  • Wheat / gluten – gluten can be inflammatory for some, and unless your wheat is organic, there is a high chance it’s been sprayed with the weed killer Glyphosate, which has been linked to certain cancers. 
  • Soy – while soy has its benefits, quality matters. Most soy in food today is non-organic, non-fermented, and highly processed. 

And a few more not-so-clean ingredients we’ve seen in prepared meals: 

  • Sodium Metabisulfite
  • Calcium Disodium Edta
  • Corn oil 
  • Vegetable shortening 
  • Corn syrup
  • Canola oil
  • Textured soy flour
  • Soy protein concentrate
  • Disodium Phosphate
  • Dried chicken stock
  • Cane sugar

How Snap is Different

Those ingredients above? You won’t find any of them in our meals, proteins, sides, desserts, or snacks. We have high standards because we believe you shouldn’t have to choose between nutrition and flavor. And with a Registered Dietitian on staff who vets every ingredient we source, you can trust that our standards don’t waver.

Ingredients you won’t find in our food:

  • Gluten
  • Refined oils* – Our kitchen uses ghee, olive oil, and coconut oil. *A couple of our dishes contain expeller pressed high-oleic sunflower oil, found in our gluten-free tortillas and in our apple-juice sweetened dried cranberries.
  • Refined sugar (for us, this includes agave nectar)
  • Soy 
  • Artificial preservatives
  • Peanuts 

What you will find in our food:

  • High-quality protein
  • Digestion-supporting fiber
  • Leafy greens
  • Lots of veggies
  • House-made sauces
  • Intentionally chosen third party brands
