Calling all pasta lovers! October 17th was National Pasta Day, and we’re celebrating the Snap Kitchen way – by giving you the rundown on whether or not pasta is healthy, and some of the healthiest pasta recipes you can make (or microwave). Read on to learn more!
Is pasta healthy?
Answer: Trick question! It all depends on how it’s prepared.
If pasta is cooked right, (al dente, all day) it is actually a low glycemic index food, as well as a source of resistant starch. This type of starch is digested and absorbed slower than simple carbohydrates, which is better for blood sugar control and helps keep you fuller for longer. Whole-grain pastas are an added bonus, as they’re a great source of protein, fiber and vitamins. This way, you’ll feel more satisfied by eating less, thanks to the protein and fiber.
It’s also important to pay attention to what you’re adding to your pasta. When you’re topping your pasta with high-fat, high-calorie toppings such as creamy sauces and cheeses, calories start to stack up fast. Consider adding a veggie-based sauce like marinara, your choice of protein, or a few of your favorite veggies instead.
