Here at Snap Kitchen, we’re big fans of healthy sources of fat. But we know that some people may need to follow a low-fat diet or may enjoy naturally low-fat foods. And sadly, low-fat eating is often synonymous with flavorless meals or 100-calorie packs. But it doesn’t have to be that way! You can choose naturally low-fat foods and add healthy fats and high-quality protein for balance. Read on for some of our favorite options!
1. Leafy Greens
Not enough has been said about leafy greens like kale, spinach, collard greens, cabbage, arugula — the list goes on. Not only are leafy greens low in fat, but they’re also packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants like Vitamins A and C.
2. Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are insane. In just one sweet potato, you’ll get 400% of your daily recommended Vitamin A, thanks to being packed with beta-carotene! And this starchy veggie is naturally low fat.
3. Shellfish
Shellfish like shrimp are super high-protein, and also low fat. For example, a 3-oz serving of shrimp is 80 calories, 20 grams of protein, and 0.3 grams of fat.
4. Chicken Breast
Chicken breast is great in just about anything and is delicious when grilled, smoked, baked, or fried. Plus, within 3 oz of chicken breast, you’ll find 27 grams of protein, but only 3 grams of fat.
5. White Fish
White fishes like cod, pollock, haddock, snapper, or Mahi-mahi are lean, low in calories, and fat. Plus, they’re excellent sources of Vitamin B12, phosphorus, and protein.
6. Grains
Particularly grains like quinoa, millet, or buckwheat. All of these grains are usually referred to as Ancient Grains and are packed with fiber, B vitamins, and vitamin E, plus zinc andiron. Plus, their high fiber makeup means you’ll stay fuller, longer.
Honorable mentions go to fruits, mushrooms, and garlic for being low fat and super delicious. What’s your favorite low-fat food? Let us know in the comments!
