Today, we’re talking Whole30.
Whole30: what is it?
The Whole30 is a 30-day nutrition reset that removes commonly inflammatory foods including grains, dairy, legumes, soy, alcohol and added sugars. The idea is to remove these foods for 30 days, then reintroduce them one by one starting on day 31 to see how they’re impacting you. The Whole30 isn’t a diet, but is instead designed to help you figure out which foods work for you and make you feel your best. Think of it as a focus (or refocus) on eating whole, real and unprocessed foods.
After 30 days, you add back in the eliminated food groups one at a time, starting with those least likely to be inflammatory. In general, it’s best to start with legumes, then gluten free grains, followed by dairy and finally gluten. For more info on reintroduction, check out our post here. When you reintroduce different foods, pay attention to how they make you feel; does dairy make your skin break out or gluten give you a headache or digestive distress? By knowing how each food group affects your body, you’ll be empowered to pick the best food choices for you moving forward. The goal is to know which foods help you feel your best and which have the opposite effect.
So… What can I eat on Whole30?
All real, whole foods (which we can totally get down with!). Think filling your plate with whole vegetables, unprocessed meats + poultry + seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds, healthy fats such as avocado or coconut oil, and even coffee (#blessed)!
Here’s a more detailed list of foods to remove during Whole30:
- Grains: oats, corn, rice, quinoa, wheat, rye, millet, sorghum, amaranth, buckwheat, sprouted grains
- Legumes: peanuts, chickpea, lentils, all beans (black, red, pinto, white, kidney, lima, fava..etc.)
- Dairy: cow milk, cheese, yogurt, cream, kefir, ice cream, frozen yogurt
- Soy: tofu, soy sauce, edamame, miso
- Added sugars (both real and artificial): maple syrup, honey, agave nectar, coconut sugar, stevia, xylitol, Splenda
- Alcohol and common additives such as MSG, carrageenan, sulfites
- Baked goods like pancakes, cookies or cakes, even if they have compliant ingredients
It might seem a little intimidating at first but remember the goal isn’t to restrict your options, but rather to help you make more mindful choices, refine your taste buds for the good stuff, and help you feel awesome. What should I expect after 30 days?
Although each person’s experience and results will be different, reported benefits such as increased energy, better digestion and skin health, and decreased sugar cravings are commonly noticed by those who complete the program. While weight loss is not a goal (it’s actually a rule that you don’t weigh or measure yourself during the 30 days), it’s often a direct side effect of focusing on eating real, whole foods and eating mindfully. Plus, people often find that their relationship with food has improved after completing a Whole30. We consider that a win-win!
